"The role of a warrior is to protect the Chiss people. The warrior's own survival is of only secondary importance." -Thrawn
• Chiss Military •
The Chiss military is a sizable force. The military has never been required as a single unit, so it is partitioned into 28 colonial units called Phalanxes. Operation of these Phalanxes usually falls to a officer appointed by the House leader, called a Syndic. Separate from these Phalanxes is the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, which is deemed a foreign asset rather than a military asset. The CEDF patrols the borders of Chiss space while the phalanxes handle any threats that get past the fleet.
Chiss are known for their patience and tactical attitude, always acting with their opponent’s next move (or three) in mind. In the Academy, youths are taught to painstakingly analyze the situation in order to formulate the most precise and effective response. This has resulted in a cultural taboo against preemptive strikes, so much so that an unprovoked attack can result in exile from the Ascendancy.
• Civilians with Military Authority •
Aristocra - Outranks even a CEDF Admiral or General. Highest rank inside the Ascendancy, borne by important members of at least some of the Ruling Families.
Syndic - Appointed by the Aristocra, a Syndic is a rank in both the CEDF and the more powerful Chiss families. A Syndic will deal with important political matters and problems within and outside of the family that do not necessarily require the Aristocra's attention and reports directly to the Aristocra.
Assistant Syndic - An Assistant Syndic ranks lower than Syndic but still deals with matters of politics and within their family and can act as diplomats while serving their family. In the case of the CEDF, an Assistant Syndic serves the CEDF rather than any one family.
• Chiss Military Officer Ranks •
Admiral/General - An Admiral is a higher ranking member of the CEDF and wears all white. As with the case of the highest ranks of the CEDF hierarchy, their family name is stripped from them and they have no colors unlike the lower ranks so as to best serve the Chiss people. A General reports directly to an Aristocra or the next highest ranking CEDF on board. Often they will lead the forces themselves as it is the Chiss way. (General Prard'ras'kleoni tells Luke Skywalker that the Chiss don't send the young to fight while the leaders watch from the sidelines.)
Phalanx Commander - The Chiss military is quite formidable and has never been required as a single unit, so it is partitioned colonial units called Phalanxes. Operation of these Phalanxes usually falls to an officer, often called a Phalanx Commander, appointed by the House leader, called a Syndic.
Colonel - Serves as a staff officer at the battalion level up. Can also command companies and similar-sized elements in more specialized fields such as special forces, reconnaissance, et cetera.
Captain - Commands companies of four platoons, responsible for everything the company does or fails to do. Can also serve as a staff officer at the battalion level up.
Lieutenant - Commands platoons of four squads, responsible for everything the platoon does or fails to do. Can also serve as a staff officer at the company or battalion level.
• Chiss Enlisted Ranks •
Master Chief - Senior enlisted soldier of the largest military elements, from a brigade on up. Aids and advises the unit commander on troop welfare, morale, and training. As well as ensuring standards and discipline are maintained.
Warrant Officer - Senior enlisted soldier of a larger element, from a company of four platoons, up to a battalion of four companies. Can also serve on higher unit support staffs as technical experts assisting staff officers
Sergeant - Responsible for supervising a squad of six soldiers, consisting of two teams. (General Drask in Survivors Quest identifies a half squad of CEDF forces as being three soldiers, ergo a full squad is six.)
Corporal - The first NCO rank, responsible for supervising two subordinate Privates in a team of three.
Private - Discharging orders of superior officers and NCOs
